Album powstał z przerwanego projektu "Lifehouse", multimedialnej opery rockowej napisanej przez gitarzystę i autora tekstów Pete'a Townshenda jako kontynuacja albumu "Tommy" z 1969 roku. Album zawiera klasyczne single Who "Won't Get Fooled Again", "Baba O'Riley" i "Behind Blue Eyes" i jest powszechnie uważany za najlepszą płytę zespołu.
